We’re moving from one iconic film legend to the next this week: Humphrey Bogart in John Huston’s “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”. The 1001 by 1 crew is a bit perplexed this week as they try and grapple with Bogart’s character, if the film is a “western”, and if the overall themes work. Plus, the director steals a child and we recast the major roles with contemporary actors. Also, this week Adam recommends “The Standoff at Sparrow Creek” (available on Tubi), Britt recommends “Michael Clayton” (available on HBO Max), and Joey recommends the series “BEEF” (available on Netflix).

145 - Cool Hand Luke

Friday Jun 23, 2023

Friday Jun 23, 2023

If it’s a movie about eating a bunch of eggs, exploitative car washes, and overt Jesus references then we must be talking about the Paul Newman led “Cool Hand Luke”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as they break it all down – plus Joey’s thoughts on Florida, Adam’s mishandling of his notes, and…does Britt not like Paul Newman??? Also, a dual recommend from Adam and Joey this week as they suggest “Brawl in Cell Block 99” (available on Tubi) while Britt recommends the wonderful AppleTV+ series “Severance”.

144 - Drive

Friday Jun 09, 2023

Friday Jun 09, 2023

Didn’t we just leave L.A.? Well…WE’RE BACK! And not only is it in the City of Angels, but we brought back Ryan Gosling to discuss Nicolas Winding Refn’s uber-cool flick “Drive”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as we discuss the killer soundtrack/score, if we believe Albert Brooks as the heavy, Driver’s moral code, and the differences from novel. And – what’s this: did Adam forget a list for the episode??? Also, this week Britt recommends “Redline” (available on VUDU or Tubi), Joey recommends “Nightcrawler” (available on HBO Max), and Adam recommends “Take Shelter” (available to rent on most major platforms).

143 - Seven Samurai

Friday May 26, 2023

Friday May 26, 2023

We FINALLY leave L.A….and we do so by crossing the Pacific Ocean to discuss Akira Kurosawa’s seminal film: “Seven Samurai”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as we discuss planning missions, the importance of the length, and which of the Seven Samurai would we be? In addition, we ponder over Toshiro Mifune’s performance and whether or not it was too “big” (not unlike his sword). Also, this week Adam recommends the film inspired by this one, “The Magnificent Seven”(available on Prime, Tubi, Kanopy, and many more), Britt recommends another samurai film with “Sword of the Stranger” (available to rent on Microsoft), and Joey keeps it Kurosawa adjacent by recommending “Living” (available to rent on most major platforms).

142 - La La Land

Friday May 12, 2023

Friday May 12, 2023

We just can’t get enough of L.A. over here at 1001 by 1, but this week we jumped from the 1980s to the 2010s and started dancing on the hoods of our cars because we are breaking down Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land”. The gang breaks it all down here: the chemistry of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, the movie musical homages, the alternate timeline for our young lovers, and all things jazz. Also, this week Britt recommends “Starry Eyes” (currently on Tubi) while Joey and Adam keep things Chazelle oriented recommending “Babylon” (currently on Paramount+) & “First Man” (available to rent on most major platforms).

We’re leaving David Lynch behind but we’re keeping Los Angeles as this week we take the Red Car into Toon Town to discuss Robert Zemeckis’ groundbreaking film: “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as they discuss the various (and lengthy) methods used to create the film, the differences from the source material, and the majesty that was the stellar Bob Hoskins. Also, this week Joey recommends the “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” film (currently on Disney+), and Adam & Britt jointly recommend both “Paddington” (currently on Netflix) & “Paddington 2” (currently on TBS/TNT).

Adam brought a curve ball to the game this week with a film none of the hosts had seen. We go to Italy (via a tall, handsome, American man) to discuss the Luchino Visconti epic: “The Leopard”. Take a long horse ride down a dusty road with us as we the discuss the gorgeous design of the film, the director-unapproved “American Cut” of the film, and whether or not Burt Lancaster works in this film. Britt brings to us our second film from The Archers (Powell & Pressburger) and takes us the ballet stage as we discuss the technicolor gem: “The Red Shoes”. Do some leg stretches and hit your spotlight as we break down this film: the Moira Shearer love triangle, the Hans Christian Andersen story the film is based on, and the absolutely magical ballet sequence in the middle of the film. BUT WAIT – is this another film that the three hosts don’t agree on? You’ll have to tune in to find out. Also, this week Britt recommends the 2018 version of “Suspiria” (currently on Prime), Joey recommends “The Menu” (currently on HBO Max0, and Adam recommends “Smile” (currently on Paramount+).
