We’re going back to the 1950s (well…the 1990s…) and we’re going back to L.A. for the last time this season to discuss the Curtis Hanson masterpiece “L.A. Confidential”. Join Britt, Joey, and Adam as they discuss ensemble casts of the 1990s, variations from the James Ellroy novel (and what a s**t he is), and all things technical (the cinematography, production design, and score get some specific love). Also, this week Joey recommends “Transformers: Rise of the Beast” (currently on Paramount +), Adam recommends another Curtis Hanson film “Wonder Boys”(currently on Paramount + & Hoopla), and Britt recommends “Hard Boiled” (available to rent on Prime).

Hold onto your dogs and get ready for a whole lot of day drinking because this week the gang travels back to the 30s to discuss the comedy-caper “The Thin Man”. Join Adam, Britt, & Joey as they discuss the witty repartee, ridiculous side characters, and expensive savings bonds. Also, this week Joey recommends “Clue” (free on Prime), Adam recommends “Imitation of Life” from 1934 (available to rent on most major platforms), and Britt recommends “Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse” (available to buy on most major platforms).

We did something a little different this week…WE DRAFTED!!! That’s right, folks: we created arbitrary rules, randomly picked an order, and our 1001 by 1 heroes selected the films for next season’s lineup. Adam, Britt, and Joey were limited to certain selections, a wild card pick, and 1 director to rank. So, if you want to get a jump start into Season 5, listen up and start watching some flicks!

This week, we conclude our dive into the work of Bong Joon-ho by breaking down and ranking his entire filmography: “Barking Dogs Never Bite”, “Memories of Murder”, “The Host, “Mother”, “Snowpiercer”, “Okja”, & “Parasite”. Where would “The Host” end up after our last episode? Does “Snowpiercer” hold up? Will anyone have something in the top spot that isn’t Parasite??? You’ll have to tune in to find out!

We are starting our foray into the great Bong Joon-ho by discussing his 2006 monster flick, “The Host”. Opinions and takes are all over the spectrum on this one, so tune in to hear about the family dynamic of our main characters, the real life incident that inspired this movie, and how the monster holds up after 17 years. Also, this week Britt recommends “House” (currently on Max & The Criterion Channel), Joey recommends “10 Cloverfield Lane” (currently on Hoopla), and Adam recommends “Train to Busan” (currently on Prime & Tubi).

After you jump to the left and step to the right, you may shiver with antici…pation as we discuss the 1975 rock’n’roll musical “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Join the crew as they discuss the things that make this movie great (mainly, and emphatically, Tim Curry), make it not so great (consent, the performance of Rocky), interesting (is Meat Loaf hot in this???), and devastating (recent remarks from the creator of the show/“Riff Raff” – Richard O’Brien). Also, this week we recommended cult musicals: Joey with “Little Shop of Horrors” (currently on Max), Adam with “Cannibal! the Musical” (currently on Tubi), and Britt with “The Lure” (currently on Max & The Criterion Channel).

We’re moving from one iconic film legend to the next this week: Humphrey Bogart in John Huston’s “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”. The 1001 by 1 crew is a bit perplexed this week as they try and grapple with Bogart’s character, if the film is a “western”, and if the overall themes work. Plus, the director steals a child and we recast the major roles with contemporary actors. Also, this week Adam recommends “The Standoff at Sparrow Creek” (available on Tubi), Britt recommends “Michael Clayton” (available on HBO Max), and Joey recommends the series “BEEF” (available on Netflix).

If it’s a movie about eating a bunch of eggs, exploitative car washes, and overt Jesus references then we must be talking about the Paul Newman led “Cool Hand Luke”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as they break it all down – plus Joey’s thoughts on Florida, Adam’s mishandling of his notes, and…does Britt not like Paul Newman??? Also, a dual recommend from Adam and Joey this week as they suggest “Brawl in Cell Block 99” (available on Tubi) while Britt recommends the wonderful AppleTV+ series “Severance”.

Didn’t we just leave L.A.? Well…WE’RE BACK! And not only is it in the City of Angels, but we brought back Ryan Gosling to discuss Nicolas Winding Refn’s uber-cool flick “Drive”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as we discuss the killer soundtrack/score, if we believe Albert Brooks as the heavy, Driver’s moral code, and the differences from novel. And – what’s this: did Adam forget a list for the episode??? Also, this week Britt recommends “Redline” (available on VUDU or Tubi), Joey recommends “Nightcrawler” (available on HBO Max), and Adam recommends “Take Shelter” (available to rent on most major platforms).

We FINALLY leave L.A….and we do so by crossing the Pacific Ocean to discuss Akira Kurosawa’s seminal film: “Seven Samurai”. Join the 1001 by 1 crew as we discuss planning missions, the importance of the length, and which of the Seven Samurai would we be? In addition, we ponder over Toshiro Mifune’s performance and whether or not it was too “big” (not unlike his sword). Also, this week Adam recommends the film inspired by this one, “The Magnificent Seven”(available on Prime, Tubi, Kanopy, and many more), Britt recommends another samurai film with “Sword of the Stranger” (available to rent on Microsoft), and Joey keeps it Kurosawa adjacent by recommending “Living” (available to rent on most major platforms).
